Accreditation Process

There are two basic types of educational accreditation, one identified as “institutional” and one referred to as “specialized” or “programmatic.”

Institutional accreditation normally applies to an entire institution, indicating that each of an institution’s parts is contributing to the achievement of the institution’s objectives, although not necessarily all at the same level of quality.

Specialized or programmatic accreditation normally applies to one or several programs, departments (business units), or schools that are parts of an institution.

Depending on accreditation agencies there are usually three stages of accreditation:

Stage One.  Institutional Membership:

A school can become an institutional member by completing an application form and submitting all official required documents, such as authorizations from appropriate state and/or federal government bodies to confer business degrees, etc.  The application and process for corporate institutions differs slightly.

Stage Two.  Candidacy Process:

To reach candidacy status an applying institution must demonstrate that its institution or program meet the accreditation standards.

A school or program seeking accreditation prepares a comprehensively self-evaluation study that measures its performance against the standards established by the accrediting institution.

A school schedules a preliminary site visit to determine its eligibility for candidacy status.

After candidacy status is obtained, an institution or program establishes in consultation with the accreditation a timeframe for attaining first-time accreditation.

To assist members of the accreditation, accreditation agencies hold regularly specialized workshops and conferences.  On the behalf of candidates for accreditation, GMC Education attends these workshops.

Stage three.  Granting the accreditation:

An institution is granted accredited status by the board of commissioners after completion of all accreditation standards.

The accrediting agency monitors each accredited institution or program throughout the period of accreditation granted to verify that it continues to meet the agency’s standards.
